Long time Tulsa resident James “Jim” Marvin Coop, passed away at Saint Francis Hospital, on May 3, 2024. He was born in Welch, Oklahoma, to James Neldo Coop and Grace Marie (Mays) Coop on November 6, 1940. James graduated from Central High School and On September 10, 1958, he joined the United States Army. James proudly served his country and since his discharge on September 8, 1961, he was active in the American Legion, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. James was also a 32nd degree Mason.

James was a barber by trade and attended night school until he was able to get an associate degree in accounting. He loved people, which was good for his barber trade. He worked in downtown Tulsa for over 50 years. He barbered at Skelly Oil Company from 1962-1971, and the Cities Service/Occidental Petroleum building from 1971-2016.  He cut hair for everyone from Oil Company Presidents to school children. One Cities Service President always said no one can cut a flat top as good as James. James was a people person, that was God fearing, had great morals, integrity and treated everyone with respect. Above all he loved his family. He attended all his sons’ sporting events (football, wrestling, and baseball) and especially enjoyed the time with them when they raced quarter midgets racing cars. He spent two years with each son building, training, and racing. Memories that will forever be remembered for Steven and Rocky. James was a rock in the community that all could look up to and respect. He will be missed by his family and the many that knew him as their barber.
