On Wednesday August 4, 2021, Henry Powell Haynes III, passed away at his home at the age of 92.

Henry was born on May 7, 1929, in Okmulgee, OK to Mabel and Henry Haynes, JR. He married Betty Bankston on June 4, 1951. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Henry graduated from Chelsea High School. He went on to graduate from Northeastern State College with a Bachelor’s in Education. He earned a Master of Theology from Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, KS, as well as a Master’s in Education from Northeastern State University. Later in life, he completed a Doctorate in Education Administration from Oklahoma State University.

Henry served as pastor of several churches throughout his life. For 10 years, Henry and his family were missionaries in Venezuela. His teaching and coaching career spanned 70 years. He ended his career as the Principal of Vinita High School, Vinita, OK.

Henry was a member of the First Baptist Church Vinita, OK. His community involvement included support of several non-profit organizations. He was involved in Lion’s Club for many years. For 6 years he served on the State Board of Mental Health and Substance Abuse for the State of Oklahoma. In recent years he actively worked with other volunteers at Craig County Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

Henry had many interests in life, preaching and teaching were both his passion and livelihood. His love for travel remained throughout his life and he had many opportunities to do so with Betty as they explored places together. When Henry retired, you could find him on the golf course or hunting. He was a runner for many years and excelled as a basketball player in college and continued to play basketball into his 60’s.

Henry’s family includes his wife, Betty; son, Michael (Robbi) Haynes; daughters, Becky (Randy) Messer, Holly (Fiancé, Dan); 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren that loved him dearly and will miss their grandpa.
